Do you remember the movie “A Few Good Men” and the part where Jack Nicholson says in the courtroom, “You can’t handle the truth.” I often feel in that predicament. Many times when I’m working with dealers and/or groups I find that they “just can’t handle the truth.” Dealers ask me what the problem is and how to fix it, and then when I tell them, they want to poo poo or make excuses as to why it’s the way it is and the way it will always be because that’s the way it’s always been.
Have you ever had a friend or relative ask your opinion on something? When you give it to them “straight up” they want to debate or argue with you over what you just told them. I mean really, if they didn’t want your opinion why the heck did they ask in the first place?
I understand part of this is human nature but that doesn’t stop me from trying to figure it out in order to be as helpful as I can to my clients. I’ve reached that point with my age and career that I’m going to say it like it is and you can suck it up, delete me or just tell me to go away. I’ve never been in this for the money alone, (anybody that says it’s not about the money is a liar,) but certainly to give something back to a business that’s been so good to me and my family.
I think it’s easy to discount people in my profession as we aren’t dealing with what you deal with in your business and your market. Let me bust your bubble on a little something right here and now. There is very little difference between your market and any other market in the country. The fundamentals, the basics, the solid processes work regardless of where you might be located. The real difference is some “get it” and some don’t.
What’s different is you. Yep, you and your willingness to open your mind and get out of the rut you’re in. You keep jerking around with the same old excuses of why you can’t do whatever. You are a very good salesman because you keep selling yourself and your staff that the road you’ve taken is correct yet your numbers are still in the tank.
You’d rather have someone like me lie to you and tell you that you’ve got it right. Well you don’t and the numbers prove it. You want a lie? I’m gonna give it to you. Santa Claus is coming to see you. That’s all I’m gonna say, Tommy Gibbs
